SAIC Grad Journal Editorship (2017-2018)

Letter from the Editor: Fall '17

Grad school can be such a whirlwind, and sometimes we get caught up in the flurry of projects, readings, papers, and theses, on top of all the studio hours. One of the coolest things about going to SAIC, however, is that we are not only studying and creating at the most influential art school in the country, we have the opportunity to do that in an exceptionally imaginative city.

Letter from the Editor: Spring '18

So, we’re in school, and our creative output is constantly being critiqued. This is what we’re here for. This is what we’re paying for: to have professional eyes and ears point us in a direction that they feel would benefit us the most. The ongoing commentary can weigh us down, though, and maybe make ourselves question our artistic choices in the first place. But here’s the thing, you are the only you.

Music Review Samples from Mutiny Radio (2011-2012)

Zion I & The Grouch - Heroes in the Healing of the Nation

From the very first track of Heroes in the Healing of the Nation, “Invitation”, The Grouch invites you into their world of words and wisdom with the reassurance that “…We are lost but we are not alone”.

Fujiya & Miyagi - Ventriloquizzing

Less upfront and more musical, the scatting in “Taiwanese Boots” is refreshing to say the least, especially when paired with snazzy percussion, funkalicious piano, and the understated sing song of a whisper. These guys definitely have a Beck-like swag, while maintaining their own unique musicality.

Richie Cunning - Night Train

Cunning reminds us how to put together a cohesive record, a long-lost art in the era of the instant-fame musician: not only are the first three tracks seamlessly reticulated, all twelve songs are rhythmically intertwined, never letting you forget that you’re on one hell of a train ride.
